Course Description
Engraved watches have become extremely popular in the luxury watch field, and this course will provide what you need to know to participate in this profitable area of hand engraving. Students will be engraving a stainless steel watch case and bezel in deep relief, a style that is most popular with watch collectors. This is an opportunity to create an heirloom watch for yourself or a family member, and the completed case can accept a high-grade movement, custom dial and hands, and a variety of straps. There is no other course of this kind. Students will also leave with a Sam Alfano designed vector graphic file for the ability to order a custom dial after the class. (Movement, strap, and dial are not included.)

  • Learn how to securely hold parts for engraving
  • Tips for preparing gravers for hard metals
  • Design discussion, demonstration, and help
  • Dividing the bezel into equal segments for continuous patterns
  • Deep relief background removal and blackening
  • Transferring and mirroring designs
  • Fine shading techniques for rich, 3D effect
  • Discussion of movements and parts for a better understanding of watchmaking
  • Sources for custom dials, straps, and parts

Prerequisites
Completion of a GRS Basic Metal Engraving course or instructor approval is required, as well as an understanding of proper tool sharpening and use of pneumatic engraving equipment.
