Course Information

Description

Students will build a sterling silver gentleman’s buckle (sometimes referred to as a box buckle) using jeweler’s bronze for edges and overlays. Proper fabrication steps, piercing and preparation of overlays, and silver soldering techniques will be covered. Students will explore finishing techniques by learning how to deal with fire scale, clean-up, and buffing. Finally, students will learn about different engraving tools and techniques for the challenge of engraving their finished buckle.

  • Decorative edge elements, including twisted wire
  • Proper piercing and prep of overlays
  • How to properly dome buckles
  • Fabrication and soldering of buckle backs
  • Addressing fire scale, solder over-runs and other cleanup challenges
  • Using micro motor for finishing
  • Techniques for engraving a finished piece, including design & scroll layout
  • Stippling and cross hatching
  • Sculpting and engraving overlays
  • Bead or bezel set stones (optional)
  • Using special gravers for working around buckle edge and overlays
  • Marking & signing finished buckle

Prerequisites

Completion of a GRS Basic Western course or instructor approval is required, as well as an understanding of proper tool sharpening and basic engraving techniques.
